7 Mistakes You’re Making at Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (and How to Fix Them)

There is nothing quite like the air in Magic Kingdom when the sun goes down and the pumpkin wreaths start to glow. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (MNSSHP) is the crown jewel of the Disney spooky season. Between the Boo-to-You parade, the rare character meet-and-greets, and the literal mountains of candy, it’s a Disney fan's dream come true.

However, because this is a specially ticketed event that only lasts five hours (officially), the pressure to "do it all" is real. I’ve seen many families spend their hard-earned money only to end up stuck in a two-hour line for a cupcake or missing the fireworks because they were waiting for a ride they could have ridden on a Tuesday morning.

If you want to live your Disney Best Life, you need a game plan. Here are the seven biggest mistakes guests make at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party: and exactly how you can avoid them to ensure your night is pure magic.

1. Waiting Until 7:00 PM to Arrive

Family arriving at Magic Kingdom for the Halloween Party

The party officially runs from 7:00 PM to midnight. If you look at your ticket, that’s what it says. But here is the best-kept "secret" that veteran Disney goers live by: Your party ticket gets you into Magic Kingdom starting at 4:00 PM.

The Mistake: Showing up at 7:00 PM. By the time you get through security, scan your magic band, and get your wristband, you’ve already lost an hour of party time.

The Fix: Be at the Magic Kingdom gates by 3:30 PM. They will have specific turnstiles for party guests. By getting in at 4:00 PM, you gain three "bonus" hours before the party even starts. Use this time to eat a solid dinner, ride a few headliner attractions (like Space Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain), and grab your party map. This way, when the clock strikes 7:00, you are already deep in the park and ready for the exclusive Halloween fun.

2. Booking a Table-Service Dinner During Party Hours

We all love a good meal at Be Our Guest or The Crystal Palace, but doing a sit-down dinner during MNSSHP is one of the biggest time-wasters possible.

The Mistake: Scheduling a 7:30 PM dinner reservation. A standard Disney table-service meal takes about 60 to 90 minutes. That is nearly 25% of your party time spent inside a restaurant where you can't see the parade, meet characters, or trick-or-treat.

The Fix: Eat a big "linner" (lunch/dinner) between 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM. Use that early entry time we talked about to fuel up. If you get hungry during the party, stick to the exclusive Halloween snacks. You haven't lived until you've tried the seasonal treats that only come out for the party!

3. Falling for the "Early Candy Trap"

As soon as 7:00 PM hits, the trick-or-treat trails open. You’ll see massive lines forming at the entrance of the park and near the front of the trails.

The Mistake: Jumping into a 20-minute line for a handful of Snickers at 7:05 PM.

The Fix: Wait. The candy lines are longest at the beginning of the night because everyone is excited. By 10:30 PM or 11:00 PM, those same lines are often walk-throughs. Disney does not run out of candy. In fact, cast members are often more generous with the scoops later in the night because they want to empty those bins!

Pro-Tip: Make sure you have a sturdy bag to carry your haul. Our Disney Best Life Xtreme Backpack is the perfect companion for carrying pounds of chocolate while keeping your hands free for more important things: like holding a churro.

4. Watching the First Parade

The Mickey’s Boo-to-You Halloween Parade is arguably the best parade Disney has ever produced. (That song will be stuck in your head for three days, guaranteed). Because it’s so iconic, the first showing is always packed.

The Mistake: Crowding onto Main Street an hour early for the 8:15 PM parade.

The Fix: Skip the first one and watch the second showing (usually around 11:15 PM). While everyone else is watching the first parade, the ride wait times and character lines will drop significantly. By the time the second parade rolls around, many families with small children have headed back to the resorts, meaning you can snag a front-row seat on the curb just 15-20 minutes before it starts.

5. Underestimating the Florida Humidity

We want to look our best for those PhotoPass opportunities, but October in Orlando isn't exactly "sweater weather." It is often 85 degrees with 90% humidity well into the evening.

The Mistake: Wearing a full velvet beast costume or a heavy polyester wig. You will be miserable, and "sweaty" isn't a great look for the family photo in front of the castle.

The Fix: Go for "Disney Bounding" or breathable fabrics. You can still be festive without the heatstroke! A great way to stay cool and stylish is by pairing some ears with a lightweight, high-quality tee. Our Disney Best Life Bella Canvas Unisex Jersey T-shirt is made from soft, breathable cotton that handles the Florida humidity like a champ. Plus, it’s a great base for a "casual Mickey" or "DIY Disney fan" costume!

6. Wasting the Party on "Regular" Rides

Magic Kingdom has amazing rides, but you can ride Pirates of the Caribbean or It's a Small World any day of the week.

The Mistake: Spending 45 minutes in line for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train during the middle of the party.

The Fix: Prioritize the "Party Exclusives." This includes rides with Halloween overlays, like Space Mountain (which goes completely dark with a spooky soundtrack) or The Mad Tea Party (with special lighting and music). Focus on things you can't do during a normal park day, like the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular stage show or meeting rare characters like Jack Skellington and Sally. If you really want to do the big rides, save them for the very end of the night or during the first parade.

7. Not Having a Character Priority List

If you want to meet the Seven Dwarfs or Jack and Sally, you need to be prepared. These are some of the rarest characters in the park, and their lines can reach 2-3 hours.

The Mistake: Deciding you want to meet Jack Skellington at 8:00 PM without a plan.

The Fix: If rare characters are your #1 priority, you need to get in line before the party starts. Character lines often start forming as early as 4:30 PM for the big stars. If you get your wristband at 4:00 PM and head straight to the meet-and-greet location, you can be finished with your top character by 7:30 PM, leaving the rest of the night free for fun. If you aren't a big "character person," skip them entirely and enjoy the low wait times elsewhere!
