If you’ve ever stepped foot inside EPCOT at Walt Disney World, you’ve likely seen a small, mischievous purple dragon with orange horns, a yellow sweater, and a personality that’s larger than life. His name is Figment, and to the Disney faithful, he is so much more than just a character, he is the unofficial king of EPCOT, the patron saint of creativity, and the star of a cult following that once saw people wait six hours just to buy a popcorn bucket in his likeness.
But if you’re new to the Disney community, you might be asking yourself: Who is this little guy, and why is everyone so obsessed with him?
Welcome to Figment 101. Whether you’re planning your first trip to Disney Best Life or you're a seasoned pro looking to brush up on your dragon lore, this is your ultimate guide to mastering the magic of Figment.
The Birth of a "Figment"
Figment didn’t come from a blockbuster movie or a hit TV show. In fact, he is one of the rare Disney characters created specifically for a theme park. He made his grand debut on March 5, 1983, as the star of the "Journey Into Imagination" attraction in EPCOT Center’s Imagination! pavilion.
The name "Figment" actually has a hilarious backstory. Imagineer Tony Baxter was watching an episode of Magnum P.I. where a character mentioned a "figment of my imagination." The phrase stuck, and soon, a legend was born.
Why is Figment Purple?
Here’s a fun piece of trivia for your next trivia night: Figment was originally supposed to be green! However, the pavilion’s sponsor at the time was Kodak. At the time, Kodak’s biggest rival was FujiFilm, whose corporate color was green. Kodak requested a change to avoid any accidental marketing for the competition. The Imagineers pivoted to purple, paired him with an orange sweater (matching Kodak’s branding), and created an iconic color palette that is now inseparable from the character.
The Dreamfinder Era: Where the Magic Began

In the original 1983 version of the ride, Figment wasn't alone. He was the sidekick to a jolly, red-bearded explorer known as the Dreamfinder. Together, they traveled the universe in the "Dream Mobile," a steampunk-inspired flying machine, collecting "sparks" of imagination to create new things.
This version of the attraction is widely considered a masterpiece of Disney storytelling. It was a sprawling, 13-minute dark ride that took guests through realms of literature, performing arts, and science. It taught us the most famous lesson in EPCOT history: “One little spark of inspiration is at the heart of all creation.”
For many Disney fans, Dreamfinder and Figment represent the golden age of EPCOT. You can still find nods to Dreamfinder today (look for the "Dean Finder" office door in the current ride’s queue!), but for the most part, Figment has taken the solo spotlight in recent decades. You can read more about the history of the attraction here.
The "Dark Times" and the Great Comeback
Every hero has a comeback story, and Figment’s is a doozy. In 1998, the original ride closed for a major refurbishment. When it reopened as "Journey Into YOUR Imagination" in 1999, fans were horrified. The Dreamfinder was gone, and Figment was reduced to a few tiny, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them cameos.
The backlash was so intense that Disney did something almost unheard of: they closed the ride again just two years later to put Figment back in. The current version, Journey Into Imagination with Figment, opened in 2002. It features Dr. Nigel Channing (played by the legendary Eric Idle) trying to lead a tour of the Imagination Institute, only to have Figment "hijack" the tour and show us that imagination is best when it’s set free.
While fans still lobby for a return to the original 1983 magic, Figment’s presence as the star of the show remains a victory for the community.
The Unofficial King of EPCOT Festivals
If you visit EPCOT during the International Festival of the Arts, you’ll see Figment everywhere. He is the mascot for this celebration of visual, culinary, and performing arts, and for good reason, what better character to represent the arts than a dragon made of pure imagination?

The Popcorn Bucket Saga
You can’t talk about Figment without mentioning the Great Popcorn Bucket War of 2022. When Disney released a Figment-shaped popcorn bucket for the Festival of the Arts, lines stretched across the park, with some fans waiting over six hours to get one. It became a viral sensation, proving that despite being a character from the 80s, Figment’s star power is stronger than ever.
Living Your Disney Best Life with Figment
So, how do you incorporate a bit of Figment magic into your own life? At Disney Best Life, we believe that Figment’s message, that "one little spark" is all you need, is something you should carry with you long after you leave the park.
1. Master the Disney Style
When you're heading to EPCOT to visit the Imagination pavilion, you need the right gear. A classic purple and orange aesthetic is a must. We recommend pairing your favorite Figment ears with a comfortable Disney Best Life Unisex Jersey T-Shirt for a look that’s both magical and park-ready.
2. Meet the Legend
After years of being only a static figure in the ride, Figment officially returned as a meet-and-greet character in 2023! You can find him inside the ImageWorks "What If" Labs at the exit of the ride. Be sure to check the My Disney Experience app for daily appearance times.
3. Seek Out the "Hidden Figments"
Beyond the ride, Figment pops up in unexpected places. During the Food & Wine Festival, look for him on the "Brush with the Masters" scavenger hunt maps. During the Flower & Garden Festival, keep an eye out for his beautiful topiary.

Why We Love Him
Why does a 40-year-old purple dragon continue to capture our hearts? It’s because Figment represents the child-like wonder in all of us. He reminds us that the world is more interesting when we look at it sideways, upside down, or through the lens of a "what if?"
As Disney fans, we're often told to grow up, but Figment tells us the exact opposite. He tells us to keep dreaming, keep creating, and never let our "sparks" go out. That is the essence of living your Disney Best Life.
